A day without a car

White South Africans do not rely on public transport. Their car, preferably a monstruous 4x4, brings them everywhere. The service of busses, trains and minibus taxis is also rather poor. As such, it is not always easy to survive without a drivers' license. Congratulations to my brother for getting it faster than me!These difficulties do not mean, however, that it would be impossible to enjoy a day without a car, as we did last Sunday. We started early in the morning with a short walk to one of our favourite breakfast places in Kloof Street. From there we took a minibus taxi to the train station. Almost immediately we could jump on a train to the Southern Suburbs.
The views on the way were simply stunning: green pastures, blooming flowers and the surf of False Bay never more than 20 metres from the window. We even saw a whale showing its tale! After a lovely hour, we arrived in Simonstown, the base of the South African navy. The town hosted the annual Penguin Festival. We indulged on seafood pastas, while Joonas enjoyed the kermess attractions and a couple of big fat pancakes.
The journey back to Cape Town was as safe and punctual as the outward trip. We never felt threatened or unsafe. Why isn't there more people taking the train for an exciting weekend trip?
