De Hoop

De Hoop, some 250 km out of Cape Town, is a nature reserve that focuses on the conservation of the coastal fynbos vegetation. Of course there are also some animals, of which the ostrich, the eland and the mountain zebra are the easiest to spot.
This wilderness was the destination of our last weekend trip. While Nick tested his mountainbike on the trails through the park, Joonas and Triin went on a car safari to the Indian Ocean. When ‘our best friend’ saw the 90 meter high snow-white dunes, he yelled “Sweeuw! Sneeuw! Nick, kijk! Sneeuw!” It was a pity we couldn’t sledge down to the sea, but, fair enough, the dunes turned out to be the perfect vantage point to observe the calving whales.
After a refreshing early morning walk, we decided to drive back to Cape Town through Swellendam, the third oldest city in South Africa. On the way there we didn’t take the highway, but slowed down on the extensive network of gravel roads through the rolling countryside.
When Joonas saw these big farming machines, he yelled “Dinosaurussen! Dinosaurussen! Nick, kijk! Dinosaurussen!”. We laughed, and tried to explain him that my surname was not 'Kijk' or 'Weetjewat' but Schuermans or, in the worst case, Saarmas (otter).
